Hood River Fire & EMS is hiring for one (1) position, starting approximately on April 1, 2025, and is also building an eligibility list for Firefighter Paramedics. This position requires a FireTEAM written examination and a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) valid within the last six months. After the application process closes, Hood River Fire & EMS will contact candidates on the eligibility list and invite them to participate in the following stages of the department selection process.

To be eligible for this (1) open position, all candidates must complete all testing by 11:59 PM on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Salary Range: 

$30.72 – $34.57 Hourly (includes 9% paramedic premium)

$7,475 (entry-Step 1) – $8,412 Monthly (Step 5)

 

FLSA: Non-Exempt

City and Department Overview: 

Hood River, with a population of nearly 9,000, serves as the county seat of Hood River County. Located just 60 miles east of Portland, Oregon, Hood River is internationally recognized as a hub for outdoor recreation, especially in windsurfing, kiteboarding, and mountain biking. Additionally, it is only 30 minutes away from major skiing and snowboarding opportunities on Mt. Hood, the tallest mountain in Oregon at over 11,000 feet. The city also boasts excellent schools and a charming, vibrant downtown with a growing arts and cultural scene.

Hood River Fire & EMS has been serving the community since its establishment in 1904. It is a full-service fire and EMS provider that also offers ambulance transportation. Our Ambulance Service Area spans approximately 145 square miles, including 110 square miles in Hood River County and 35 square miles in Wasco County. In 2024, we responded to over 2,000 incidents from a single station. Our staff operates on a 48/96 A-B-C schedule.

Job Requirements

Age: 18

Citizenship Required: US citizenship is not required. Candidates will be required to show proof of their ability to work in the U.S.

High School Grad/GED: Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

College: Not required

Additional education: In addition to a high school diploma or equivalent, post-high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

Academy Certification: No

Prior Experience: None required

Necessary Certifications: Oregon Paramedic certification by the start date. National Registry or other state-certified paramedics must meet the State of Oregon Paramedic certification requirements and are responsible for applying for reciprocity to ensure they have Oregon Paramedic certification by the start date. You can view reciprocity information via the State of Oregon Public Health website. A provisional Oregon Paramedic certification does not meet the minimum requirement.

Additionally, candidates must possess American Heart Association certifications for ACLS and PALS before the start date.

NFPA Firefighter I (or equivalent) upon appointment.

Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: All non-expunged convictions must be disclosed and reviewed in relation to number, severity, date, and other relevant circumstances. Candidates must not have criminal convictions that would prevent certifications from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standard and the Oregon Health Authority.

Driving Disqualifiers: To drive a city vehicle, one must possess a valid driver’s license recognized by the state of Oregon and maintain a driving record insurable by the City’s insurer.

Additional Disqualifiers: Must meet National Fire  Protection (NFPA) standards for health and fitness. Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
